Safety concern halts search for bodies in Verulam structural collapse
Updated | By Newswatch
Rescue teams have had to halt their search for two people following a structural collapse in Verulam, north of Durban.
Emergency personnel from eThekwini and Umhlali were alerted on Thursday night, after the partial collapse of a home triggered by heavy rains.
IPSS Medical Rescue's Paul Herbst says they were told that two people were inside the property and in separate rooms.
eThekwini Fire had to first make sure that the remaining structure was safe enough for teams to enter.
Herbst says the search operation was put on hold in the early hours of this morning over safety concerns.
"After careful consideration and assistance of a structural engineer, the recovery progress has been put to a stop for now.
"Specialised equipment has been called in to secure the area for the rescue workers for the recovery progress. Once the equipment has arrived and has been set up, the recovery process of the deceased will continue."
