Over 800 000 students sat for the exams. Last week, Quality Assurance Body Umalusi announced a decline in the pass rate for the class of 2015 compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile teacher union, Sadtu has scrapped its plans to disrupt the release of the KZN results in Durban tomorrow.

The union had threatened the action after the department's failure to pay matric exam markers and Grade R teachers before Christmas last year.

Sadtu's Nomarashiya Caluza says they've since met with the department.

"We are happy with the progress report that we are receiving. As I was indicating, markers will be getting their money as well as Grade R teachers will be getting and their full amount first thing next week," she said.

Provincial spokesperson for the department, Muzi Mahlambi says they expect tomorrow's official ceremony to run smoothly.

"We are engaging with Sadtu in the matters that they are raising and the engagement is very progressive. We do not anticipate any problems come tomorrow," he said.
