Sadtu welcomes ‘overdue’ decision not to public matric results

The South African Democratic Teachers Union has welcomed a decision not to publish the matric results in newspapers.

The Department of Basic Education on Tuesday said that the Class of 2021's results won't be made public on any platform - in line with the personal data rules spelt out in the Protection of Personal Information Act.
Sadtu's Nomusa Cembi says their student ally Cosas has been calling for NSC results to be kept private, for a long time. “We believe this will end up lessen the stress suffered by students, as some end up committing suicide due to the embarrassment caused when their names do not appear in the media, announcing to the whole word that they have failed.
“It is our view that the publishing of the results was an unnecessary invasion of privacy of many learners.
Cembi has also called on the department to sort out other issues ahead of the new academic year.
“We are still on alert level 1, which required us among other things, to maintain a one metre social distancing. It’s sad to note that fewer classrooms have been build to ensure adequate space for all the learners to learn at once.”
