Sadtu: Someone must account for Enyobeni tragedy
Updated | By Algoa FM
The South African Democratic Teachers Union says someone must account for the deaths of 21 people in the East London tavern tragedy.
The union says questions are being asked and a scapegoat is being sought to apportion blame.
Sadtu's Nomusa Cembi says the incident is a sad reminder of the appalling conditions under which young people live where liquor consumption and frequenting taverns have become leisure activities for many youth.
She says liquor regulations are poorly enforced in townships and calls on authorities to crack down.

Cembi says the actions of the Eastern Cape Liquor Board to close the Enyobeni tavern is a welcome move but a little too late.
"The incident is a sad reminder of the conditions our you g people live under, that liquor consumption and this frequent think of taverns has become a leisure activity for many of our youth.
"So, we are saying a conversation needs to be had by not only the community of Scenery Park, but society at large on how South African supports the youth."
