SADTU: More teachers needed in KZN schools

The South African Democratic Teachers Union says the recent appointment of 1 530 teachers in KwaZulu-Natal will not be enough to solve the teacher shortage in schools.

Last week the KZN Department of Education filled critical vacancies in mathematics, maths literacy, physical and life sciences, as well as technical subjects. 

 

The union's Nomarashiya Caluza says they welcome the move, but more subjects need to be prioritised.

 

“ All subjects are critical to the learners that do them. If you check the list of critical posts, they will talk of maths [and] science. What about the learner who does history which is the main subject for that learner? Is it not critical for the learner – not for the school, not for the department, but for the learners?"

She feels primary schools are being neglected.

 

"The focus has always been in high school when we know very well that even primary schools have vacancies that need to be filled. These appointments are not enough."
