SADTU issues an ultimatum over teachers' pay

Teachers' union SADTU in KZN has given the provincial Education Department five days to pay Grade R teachers their increases.

This was among several grievances raised at a media briefing in Durban yesterday.

The union's Provincial Secretary Nomarashiya Caluza says payment was due on Christmas Eve.

''We've also raised an issue around the conditions of service that our Grade R practitioners find themselves under and we have also decided that if the department is unable to come up with a solution closer to our demands, then we are going to engage in an action, which we are still going to decide on as the leadership, to ensure that we force them to pay what is due to our members,'' she said.

They have also accused the department of post-fixing saying a Director of Legal Services was appointed without following proper procedure.

The Education Department yesterday told Newswatch that they're working on the payments.
