The Department says Grade 12s will sit again for Maths 2 and Physical Science 2 papers, next Tuesday and Thursday.

SADTU believes this is unfair to all pupils, adding an investigation into the leak is still being done.

SADTUs Nomusa Cembi says, "Preparing for the exams were not easy under COVID-19 conditions and the learner's mental health. And having them to re-write will cause a lot more anxiety, we know this was quite a tough year."

A 31-year-old man, who works for a company in Joburg, that was contracted to print the NSC question sheets, was arrested.

Meanwhile, the department's Elijah Mahlangu says the decision to rewrite will benefit matrics in the long run.

He says it was to avoid any risk of the exams being declared null and void by uMalusi in February.

" We do not expect resistance from the teachers' union. We are going to wait for them to get to court and see the document that they are going to submit at court and take it from there.

"But we said it was better to ask them re-write so that we can proceed without any cloud hanging over the results," he adds.

KZN Education says it's planning on meeting with key stakeholders in the wake of a backlash to the Minister's announcement on Friday.

KZN Education's Muzi Mahlambi says they hope there is an understanding between all the parties concerned.

"We are going to be consulting provincially our stakeholders and the government body and the teacher unions and the student formation so that we have a way forward around the issue, given reaction on the matter.
