SADTU claims schools burying COVID-19 cases
The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) is concerned that there may be school principals who are not reporting cases of COVID-19 to keep their gates open.
The teachers union says some schools remain open despite reports of confirmed cases.
SADTU Provincial Secretary, Nomarashiya Caluza says they have received reports of schools hiding confirmed cases and remain open to welcome the return of more pupils in July.
Caluza says the responsibility is on everyone to help curb the spread of the virus.
"What we are observing is that some principals are not prepared to declare or report cases because of fear of stigmatisation of their school.

"We are saying that is very dangerous because it puts the lives of teachers and learners at risk as when cases are not reported, teachers will continue coming to school without the school being decontaminated," she says.
On Tuesday, the National Department of Basic Education revealed 775 schools in the country were affected by COVID-19.
It says 1169 educators have tested positive for the virus with 523 pupils having contracted the virus this month.
