Sadia Sukhraj case: Police brutality to be investigated
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate together with the Civilian Secretariat, which serves as technical advisor to the Minister of Police, will probe allegations of police brutality and excessive force during a march on the Chastworth Police Station following the death of 9-year-old Sadia Sukhraj last month.
Police Minister Bheki Cele made the announcement when he met with the south Durban community for the second time in as many weeks yesterday.
At his previous visit, residents complained that protesters - including children and the elderly - had been manhandled and had teargas fired at them.
"These two police bodies will be responsible for further investigating issues you have been complaining about. So the commission, which will be run by them, will advise us on what to do after their findings", he said.
Cele says the investigation will be a holistic one.
"If you need us to go further we will do so. They investigate what wrongs police have done and also what have the members of the community done", Cele said.
