SACP pushes for Chris Hani killer to stay behind bars
With today being the 23rd anniversary of Chris Hani's death, the South African Communist Party says it will exhaust all legal avenues to make sure his killer is not released.
The North Gauteng High Court last month said Polish immigrant Janusz Walus should be let out on parole within 15 days. However, the Justice Department made an 11th hour announcement that that it had filed papers for leave to appeal the court's decision. SACP spokesperson, Alex Mashilo, says they feel Walus remains unrepentant - calling him a murderer who has shown no remorse.
"The murder of Chris Hani drove South Africa to the brink of a civil war. Had a war culminated there would have been devastating consequences," he said.
"The SACP is prepared to challenge is parole until such time where no other avenue exists to challenge the parole," Mashilo said.
Hani was shot dead outside his home in Dawn Park near Boksburg in 1993. A commemoration service - which will be addressed by SACP leader Blade Nzimande - is taking place this morning at the Thomas Titus Nkobi Park on the East Rand.
