The President instructed the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to probe damning allegations of corruption at the utility.

Claims of tender irregularities to the tune of R220 million with political links - also came under the microscope.

The chair of the interim board and an audit executive are said to have been on the receiving end of death threats.

The SACP's Themba Mthembu says the R1 billion SIU probe needs to be published.

"The truth maybe so damaging to very highly placed people. There is a lot of money involved in this investigation, which maybe close to a billion.

"That is a lot of money when people don't have water and when there are many disruptions of water supply to our communities and the people must be told because these things affect their daily lives. They must know."
