SACC: Ministerial hostage drama ‘serious offence’ against state
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The South African Council of Churches says Thursday night’s hostage drama should be considered a serious offence against the state.
Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Thandi Modise, her deputy, and Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele were rescued after they were held against their will by disgruntled military veterans at a Pretoria hotel.
Modise said in a press briefing after the ordeal that while their lives were not in danger they were unhappy they’d been placed in that situation.
A total of 56 people were arrested.
The council’s general-secretary Bishop Malusi Mpumalwana believes there are deep-seated issues that need to be probed.
Meanwhile, the disbanded Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) has called on government to release the 56 people.
