Thousands, including expats, have been fleeing Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities after Russia's invasion last week.

"We have some reports that Africans, in particular, are being subjected to bad treatment at some of these borders," says the department's Clayson Monyela.

"So we have dispatched our ambassadors at some of these neighbouring countries to be on the ground at these border posts to resolve these matters to ensure that our nationals are assisted to cross."

Monyela has urged South Africans who haven't registered with the embassy to make contact with the ambassador.

"Andre Groenewald continues to work around the clock. He is in touch with all the South Africans who are still in Ukraine. He's updating them regularly.

"He has a WhatsApp group going, all the South Africans are there that we know of and registered with us. We are in touch with them and are all accounted for."

The Ukraine health ministry says 352 civilians, including 14 children, have been killed so far.
