SA unlikely to reach herd immunity before fourth wave: SAMA

The South Africa Medical Association (SAMA) says the low uptake of Covid-19 vaccines means South Africa is unlikely to reach herd immunity before the fourth wave hits in a few months.
Communicable diseases experts have just confirmed we're officially out of the third wave, which the country entered in early June.
SAMA chairperson Dr Angelique Coetzee says the number of daily infections has now dropped significantly with 967 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours.
"Infectivity rate is around five percent and we expect that it should stay more or less there. We'll see what happens after the elections.
"It might be that two weeks after the elections, we start to see an increase but again, it's going to depend on what happens, how people behave during the elections.
"Unfortunately, we don't think we will have any herd immunity reached by December at this current vaccination rate."
So far, 16.8 million coronavirus jabs have been administered, while 8.3 million people have been fully vaccinated.
