SA still a violent society: Nhleko
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Police Minister Nathi Nhleko says the latest crime statistics reveal South Africa is still a very violent society.
He released the crime statistics for the 2015/2016 financial year on Friday.
Contact crimes, which are violent in nature, have increased by 1 percent in the current financial year when compared to the previous financial year
The analysis presented by the minister in Parliament yesterday indicated a decline in most categories of crime, with the exception of contact crimes.
These include murder, sexual offences, assault and robbery.
Nhleko emphasised that alcohol abuse remains a key generator in sexual violence related crimes, murder and attempted murder.
Nhleko said the data indicates that South Africans need to reflect on their social behavioural patterns.
"All it says about us as South Africans is that we are violent, so we have a prevalent culture of violence among ourselves and do deal with this particular problem is not just only what government must do, we have to question ourselves," he said.
