The Department of Water and Sanitation says although dam water levels have increased due to the recent rains, the country still faces a drought crisis.

The department added that while there have been some slight improvements with the national average increasing by 2.1% - more needs to be done to intensify efforts to save water.
KZN’s levels are up 1.1 % compared to the previous week. Additionally, the Umgeni system has improved by 1% in the past week, with levels now sitting at 48.6%.

Department spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, says despite this - South Africans must continue to be water-wise.
"The recent rains that we've been experiencing in the country have been very helpful in an increase in the dam levels - such that the issue of drought was not too impactful," he said.

Ratau says that in spite of the recent rains, the country remains in the grips of drought.
"We are still in a situation where we need to be careful with the target that we've received and are continuing to receive, and therefore all of us must remember that South Africa is still caught-up in the drought," he said.
