SA slipping into mafia state amid rising tide of violent crime - activist

An anti-crime activist says police need to react to daily crimes in the same way they did the national shutdown on Monday.

Yusuf Abramjee says the levels of violence in the country are increasing by the day.


He says South Africa is also fast slipping into a mafia state and assassinations are becoming a common occurrence.


"We saw a massive deployment of security forces across South Africa on Monday during the national shutdown. If they can control the visibility over one day and be out in full force, I can't understand why they can't do it each and every day when criminals are running amok."

"The police really need to beef up their resources and get their act together. Their investigative skills are very weak."


On Tuesday in Durban, five people were killed in two separate shootings.


Two taxi bosses were killed on the Berea while seated in a minibus on Carters Avenue. The Taxi Violence Unit is investigating their murders.


An hour later, a Chatsworth man was gunned down, along with his wife and nine-year-old daughter, in a drive-by shooting in Springfield.

Police say the man was a person of interest in some Hawks cases.


The suspects are said to be known and a search for them continues.
