SA slightly improves in Maths, Science rankings

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says improving education levels in SA should be a collective effort - between the department, and other stakeholders.

Results of the 2015 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study were released yesterday.

The country has shown a slight improvement in rankings. However, the study places South Africa amongst the worst performing countries in both Maths and Science - at a Grade 6 and Grade 9 level.

The study is a cross-national assessment of the two subject levels of learners from various countries - between 2003 and 2015.

Motshekga says this indicates that changes made to the system are working

"The Department of Basic Education works with the three departments on the curriculum to make sure that there's input on teacher training of Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners once they have to look at the [teaching] conditions. My biggest fear in education is to slide back," she said.
