SA sees sharp rise in Covid-19 deaths

South Africa has recorded a further 633 Covid-related deaths, bringing the country’s death toll to 65 142.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says 12 537 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in the last 24-hour reporting period.
“The total number of cases today (n= 12 537) is higher than yesterday (n= 11 182) but lower than the average number of new cases per day over the 7 preceding days (n=18 344).
The 7-day moving average daily number of cases has decreased,” reads the statement.
The NICD says the increase represents a 24.2% positivity rate.
Gauteng recorded 6 316 new Cases in the last 24 hours.

The majority of new cases comes from Gauteng (50%), followed by Western Cape with 14%.
KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and North West accounted for 7% of cases each, while Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape accounted for 5% each, Free State accounted for 4% and Northern Cape is the lowest with 1% of Yesterday’s new cases.
The institute says there has been an increase of 619 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.
A total of 17 157 people are currently admitted in both private and public facilities for Covid-19 related illnesses.
On the vaccine front, 137 421 vaccines were administered in the last 24 hours.
