SA remembers Marikana tragedy

South Africa has remembered the bloodshed and horror of the 2012 Marikana shootings at Lonmin.
The Democratic Alliance has questioned why National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega is still in office.
Party leader Mmusi Maimane was speaking in Rustenburg yesterday during the third anniversary commemorating the deaths of 34 miners at Lonmin mine.
He says Phiyega must be fired.
He also says former Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa must be held accountable.
''It was unlikely that Minister Nathi Mthethwa did not know when the police were asking for ammunition on that day therefore if he knew then he is also responsible for what happened on that day,'' he said.
Meanwhile EFF leader Julius Malema says although ten other people were killed in the area days before - the events of August the 16th were as a result of collusion between the state and private business.
''Those who died before and those who died after, it is still a criminal matter which must be investigated - however August 16 is when Lonmin working with the state [killed] black people,'' he said.
