The money will be allocated from the Clean Technology Fund, which is one of the two funds under the Climate Investment Funds.

Environmental Affairs Minister Barbara Creecy has been speaking at a press conference ahead of the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow - starting in a little over a week's time.

She says the investment is a small but important one and will allow them to focus on the energy transition plan.

"Including repowering and repurposing a retired coal plant and investment in new low carbon generation capacity.

"We hope to use the informal side of the meetings that take place at Cop26 to generate further interest ion supporting our country's transition to a low carbon economy and climate resilient society."

Last month, government met with representatives from wealthy nations as it seeks R76 billion to move South Africa to clean energy.

The United Nations, in partnership with cities around the world, investors and other players, aims to half emissions globally by 2030 and achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

"South Africa is among the many vulnerable developing countries that are already experiencing the impacts of climate change in our daily lives.

"This is evident from the increased frequency of extreme weather conditions, such as floods, droughts and heatwaves."
