SA passes 88 000 Covid-19 deaths

South Africa has breached the 88 000 mark in Covid-19 deaths on Thursday evening, after 123 more related deaths were recorded.

The country now has a total of 88 104 Covid-19 related fatalities.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reports a further 989 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours reporting cycle.
This brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 909 757.
The institute says the latest increase represents a 2.9% positivity rate.
KwaZulu-Natal is leading with 194 new cases.
“The majority of new cases today are from KwaZulu-Natal (20%), followed by Western Cape (19%). Gauteng Province accounted for 16%; Eastern Cape accounted for 13%; Free State accounted for 11%; Northern Cape accounted for 10%; Mpumalanga and North West each accounted for 5% respectively, and Limpopo accounted for 2% of today’s new cases,” the NICD said in a statement.
There has been an increase of 113 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with a total of 5 708 people currently admitted in both private and public facilities.
On the vaccine front, 212 162 Covid-19 jabs were administered on Thursday.
