SA in need of billions to sustain agriculture sector
Updated | By OFM News
Organised agriculture says South Africa will need R12.5-billion in funding over the next three years to prevent the collapse of the agriculture sector.
Agri SA's Omri Van Zyl says assistance measures need to be put in place to enable farmers to keep producing.
"There's a recovery plan and then there's an assistance plan. In terms of the assistance plan, you're looking at R12.5-billion just on the medium case scenario.
"There's a best scenario and a worst case scenario. A lot of that goes towards feed and fodder, herd rebuilding, production, credit subsidies...,"he said.
Van Zyl says they have also renewed calls for government to declare a national disaster as a result of the crippling drought.
