SA Medical Association calls for approach to deal with initiation death toll
Updated | By Newswatch
The South African Medical Association in the Eastern Cape is calling for a shared provincial stewardship approach to dealing with the growing number of deaths of initiates, which stands at 25 so far this season.
SAMA called for the creation of a Directorate for Circumcisions under the Office of the Premier, saying that this would be a body it would readily partner with.
Spokesperson, Dr Mzulingile Nodikida, says the SA Medical Association is also ready to partner with traditional leaders and government in the province to bring an end to the tragic and untimely loss of young lives.
Our view is that the efforts have been disjointed so we think that skills come to draw from every way in the province, including ourselves as the Medical Association."
He adds, "some of our members have gone through the process so they understand and they will not compromise the ritual," says Nodikida
