The SA Hindu Maha Sabha says its impressed by the number of people moving towards greener Diwali celebrations.
This as more people are opting to use sustainable trimmings in form of lights instead of fireworks for the sake of their pets. The festival of lights is celebrated around the world today.
President of the organisation Ashwin Trikamjee says greener practises should not only be limited to Diwali.
"More people - young and old - are becoming aware of the need for the human race to protect the environment because we all know about the worldwide call to protect the environment", he said.
He urged the Hindu community to be aware of how they celebrate the festival of lights this year owing to the Coronavirus pandemic.
"Large social gathering have become environments for the virus to spread so we must keep from large gatherings during this time and enjoy it with family", Trikamjee.
