Ramokgopa updated the nation on the energy action plan on Monday morning.

He said this is an affirmation and validation of the work the Eskom team is doing.

"We have turned the corner. We are not yet there; when we are there, we will let you know that we are there, and we don't have to get any confirmation from me because the lights will be on 24 hours of the day, consecutive days, going into the future.

"We should be able to lift the South African economy, ensure that we keep people into employment, protect existing jobs and ensure that indeed we are able to improve the quality of life and simultaneously we are able to ensure universal access."

He said the government is doing everything it can to ensure the reliability of the ageing generation units.

"As they are ageing, the kind of performance that you expect is also going to taper down unless we make significant investments in improvements, and of course, you need to juxtapose that with the cost of doing that or just rely on new generation capacity. You can’t solely rely on these power stations."
