SA has a major role to play in the fight against HIV/Aids

There are calls for South Africans to do the responsible thing in the fight against HIV/Aids.

New UNAIDS ambassador and Durban professor, Quarraisha Karim believes the country has an important role to play in the fight against HIV/Aids.
"The important first step is knowledge of your HIV status. Based on your status you can make important decisions on how to stay uninfected, or if affected, to be initiated on treatment," she says.
People across the globe will mark World Aids Day tomorrow.
Karim says South Africa is home to one out of five people living with HIV, one out of five new infections and one out of five deaths.
"This gives us some indications on how important South Africa is and its response in altering the epidemic's trajectory," she says.
Karim says around 20% of those infected live in Sub-Saharan Africa.
