SA govt positive on growth of economy
Updated | By Troye Lund
Government is cautiously optimistic that South Africa’s economy will start growing more quickly.
During a briefing from cabinet’s economic cluster this morning, ministers painted a positive view on what is being done to boost economic growth and employment.
The briefing, which was led by Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Gugile Nkwinti follows the medium-term budget in which Finance minister Nhlanhla Nene set out the precarious position that South Africa is in, as it tries to balance repaying debt, government salaries and keeping up services.
Nkwinti says government is making good progress in addressing obstacles to growth, including electricity supply.
While government is at pains to stress that it is taking economic matters seriously, rating agencies have warned that they are watching closely.
