SA to face more violent protests before elections: Expert
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
A security expert believes there will be an increase in violent protests in the build-up to the 2016 local government elections.
The comment comes after days of unrest in Tshwane, following the announcement of the ANC's mayoral candidate for the Metro.
Protesters don't want Durban-born Thoko Didiza's name on the ballot.
Jakkie Cilliers from the Institute for Security Studies feels an increase in conflict within the ANC can also be expected.
He says the country has seen a growth in protest action since 2011.
''South Africa faces quite a violent and turbulent future and at the same time it is important to recognise that levels of violence that we see today are not what we saw in 1976 or 1985.
''This is hugely distressing, but I think it largely reflects the factionalism and the leadership failures that we see in South Africa and also the broader economic picture,'' he said.
