SA ‘committed’ to eliminating malaria by ’28
The Health Department says despite challenges like climate change-induced heatwaves, South Africa remains committed to eliminating malaria by 2028, aligning with the National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan.
The department says progress has been notable in provinces like Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal, yet local transmission requires further attention.
As the country joins the global community to observe World Malaria Day on Thursday, stakeholders are urged to collaborate for a healthier future.
National Health spokesperson Foster Mohale says 9,795 cases and 106 deaths were reported in 2023.

"As the country joins the global community to observe World Malaria Day on April 25 to recognise global efforts to control malaria to reduce the burden of the disease and avoid preventable deaths, the Department of Health urges all stakeholders, including communities, healthcare professionals, civil society organisations, and international partners, to collaborate in intensifying the fight against malaria, aiming to foster a healthier and more equitable world for current and future generations."
