SA climate activists back French NGO case against TotalEnergies
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Climate change activists and a group of South African small-scale fishers are in Paris to support a French NGO’s legal action against TotalEnergies.
The petroleum company is being accused of contributing to climate change and the impact it's having on human life.
Lisa Makuala, an advocacy officer at The Green Connection, is in France to support the legal action.
"We hope that this court case will set a precedent for how other players and multi-national cooperation invest their money in sustainable projects.
"We really hope it will lead to that, as we hope that these companies will move away from fossil fuels and start investing in projects that help develop the country and save people's lives, but at the same time projects that do not lead to more problems when it comes to climate issues."

The company was given permission to drill five exploration wells in a petroleum block off the coast of South Africa.
Recently, Green Connection and Natural Justice also launched their own legal battle at Western Cape High Court against TotalEnergies and the government.
They've called for good governance of the environment and livelihoods of communities.
