SA blood alcohol limit to go to zero
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
South African motorists will soon be driving under stricter rules as the blood alcohol limit is set to be cut to zero.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula made the announcement while delivering the festive season road stats via a national address yesterday where he said overall there was a 7% decrease in road deaths.
The current permitted blood alcohol limit is less than 0,05 grams per 100 millilitres - but government has been hinting at bringing this down to zero.
Mbalula says this, along with the demerit system will come into effect this year.
"Stats are telling us that we are dying on the roads because of drunk drivers", he said.
"So we are hitting against them using the law. That is what we are doing", Mbalula said.
