Rubber bullets fly as Soweto pastor, churchgoers attack metro cops
A pastor and several churchgoers have been arrested for attacking Johannesburg metro police officers at Unity Fellowship Church in Soweto.
The officers were attacked by angry church members when they attended to a noise complaint in Midway on Sunday.
Several state vehicles were also damaged during the altercation.
Metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla says more than two thousand people attended the church service.
"Several church members were arrested, including the pastor of that church.
"They were charged at Moroka Police Station for public violence, assault, malicious damage to property, and contravention of Disaster Management Act, as more than two thousand people were attending the church service."
Fihla says four people, including two officers, were injured.
"Rubber bullets were then used to disperse the aggressive churchgoers who damaged JMPD patrol vehicles and injured two officers. One officer had to be taken to Milpark Hospital.
"Two churchgoers were also injured. One was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital."
