RTMC to clamp down on reckless driving on KZN roads
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Road Traffic Management Corporation says officials will be zoning in on areas where people gather to drink over the upcoming holiday period.
The corporation wants to halve the number of fatalities on our roads this Easter in comparison to last year when about 30 deaths were recorded on KZN roads.
Spokesperson Simon Zwane says by targeting areas where people consume alcohol, the problem of drunk-driving can be addressed before motorists get behind the wheel.
"That's where the problem begins - we are interestingly discovering that most crashes happen in residential areas rather than on the main roads.
"We want to deal with that phenomenon. Some of them is because they have come from the pubs and taverns - they drive under the influence of alcohol and become reckless," he said.
Zwane says long distance public transport drivers will not be exempt from the process.
Meanwhile, the N3 Toll Concession - which manages the N3 freeway linking Durban and Johannesburg - expects traffic volumes to pick up today ahead of the long weekend.
