In the statement on Sunday, Traditional Prime Minister Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi stated that the king had been hospitalised after falling ill.

Buthelezi said it was suspected that the king had been poisoned.

But the monarch's spokesperson Prince Africa Zulu says this isn't the first time incorrect information has been spread about his majesty.

Zulu says the King was visiting his uncle and was sent for a routine, planned check-up.

"The motives are unclear. However, the king remains mindful that the political environment in South Africa is rife due to the approaching cycle of the political elections. It, therefore, seems the intention is to create a public perception that His Majesty is unwell and unfit."
