Routes leading to Port Shepstone are a no-go warns RTI

The Road Traffic Inspectorate is warning motorists to stay away from the N2 and the R102 leading to Port Shepstone, saying this morning's protest action has turned volatile.

Several routes leading to the south coast town have been blocked by demonstrators upset over service delivery in the district and water supply issues. 


The RTI's Zinhle Mali says four trucks were set alight during protest action last night. There also reports that municipal offices in Izingolweni were torched.


"Yesterday we were using alternative routes which is R102, but today all the routes towards Port Shepstone is closed. It's not safe at all for motorists because protestors are stoning cars," she says. 


"The situation is volatile, however, we are sending our members to monitor the situation." 


The N2 turnoff at Paddock, Harding, Hibberdene and Umzumbe are some of the areas affected.

KZN police have confirmed that three people have been arrested during disruptive protests on the N2 and R102 near Port Shepstone.


Several routes leading to the south coast town have been blocked by demonstrators irate over a lack of service delivery in the district and water supply issues. 


Police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala says Izingolweni hall, the municipal building, five vehicles and a grader were set alight by unruly protesters. 


Gwala says a guardhouse was also torched. 

"This morning, a group of people broke into a business premise and stole liquor. Four trucks were set alight yesterday afternoon and charges of malicious damage of property were opened."
