Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
A suspected thief has been shot dead and two others in hospital following a high-speed chase in Pietermaritzburg.

After a month-long investigation into a spate of incidents of theft of motor vehicles in and around Pietermaritzburg - police tracked the trio down last night.
They tried to pull the suspects over but they sped away. The police gave chase and a shootout ensued.
"They started to shoot towards the members and the members retaliated. It is alleged that the vehicle belonging to the suspects collided into a civilian's vehicle and it overturned. The police managed to arrest two suspects who had gunshot wounds. The third suspect died at the scene," police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane said.
