Road safety cannot be a gamble: Mbalula

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says illegal and unroadworthy vehicles must be taken off the road.

He was speaking in Gauteng at the launch of a revised taxi recapitalisation programme.
It will see the scrapping of 1,000 illegally converted panel vans.

He says they will be issuing notices after consulting with industry bosses.The Department says it has so far received and processed nearly 1,500 scrapping applications.

Mbalula says it cannot be business as usual with the country's high rate of road fatalities."We cannot allow this country, as we fight the carnage on the road, to have coffins in the name of transport," he said.
"The question of safety is no longer something we can gamble on."
