Richmond families to be compensated for lost land
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
More than a hundred families from Richmond in the KZN Midlands will be compensated today for land that was dispossessed decades ago.
"We acquired 822 hectares for the households that opted for land restoration and we have spent just above R10 million to acquire that piece of land. Those families that opted for financial compensation could be paid out and the total value of their financial compensation is in the region of R25 million," he says.
Bheki Mbili with the Commission on Restitution of Land Rights says 114 families will be paid out at an event at the Richmond Sports Ground this afternoon.
He says though, a handful of families in the Mchobololo region, wanted their land restored to them instead.
Mbili says hundreds of land claims, that were submitted in the 1990s, still need to be finalised.
"In KwaZulu-Natal, we received in excess of 16 000 land claims. We have settled just above 15 000 so we are still left with around 1800 land claims yet to settle."
