Richards Bay pupil, 12, gets hero's award

A KZN pupil has received a hero's award after saving her younger sister during a near-drowning incident.

Twelve-year-old Beth Laas bravely came to her six-year-old sister's rescue who got into difficulty at Pelican Island in Richards Bay.
The Richards Bay Primary School head girl was honoured with the Netcare 911 Hero Award at her school yesterday.
Paramedics say Lass instinctively came to her sister's aid by diving into the water after they tried to cross a trough and then disappeared under the water.
Netcare 911 paramedics - who were notified of the incident - say Laas had stopped breathing after her younger sister was pulled from the water first. She was treated and taken to a local hospital for further care.
