City of Umhlathuze
officials on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast believe the protests that rocked
Richards Bay this week were driven by concerns around crime and jobs.
It says local truckers were behind yesterday's blockade on the N2 near Enseleni township.
The
municipality's Mdu Ncalane says they had voiced their frustration over the lack
of jobs and employment of foreign workers.

He says it is important for people to understand that they are dealing with separate issues.
“People should be able to separate the issues. We were dealing with the issue of the taxi associations, who were allegedly fighting with vagrants and drug dealers who are believed to be foreign nationals,” said Ncalane.
“Yesterday, the issue was a separate matter altogether, which the Saps and Province are dealing with. They are separate matters that the police and other security authorities are dealing with.”
There have been demonstrations every day this week.
This woman has told Newswatch drug problems are among their main concerns.
“It is just going on. The police need to act to stop the corruption – that is what it is all about here. The drug dealers are killing people.”
