Earlier, students gathered at Purple Square where Mabizela addressed them.

Rhodes spokesperson, Luzuko Jacobs, says academic activities were suspended for the day, while flags are flying at half-mast.

Jacobs says they are looking into suspending the alleged perpetrator.

"We are also going to be approaching the NPA and the police to see if an inquest can be conducted. We believe that it should be conducted on the circumstances into the death of the student.  It happens as we are reflecting on what we as a society are doing to our women. It's beyond tragic," he said.

NMU says a case has been registered with the police.

Addressing the protesting students, Yandisa Jubase, says their protest is not only about this case but about security on campus in general
