An animal welfare group says an old, stray dog had to be put down last week after an abhorrent hacking case in Flamingo Heights.

Shabnam Baran, who's with Stray Paws, was the one who rescued the canine. She says the dog named Troy was found in a bad shape.

Due to the extent of his injuries, there was nothing they could do to save him.

"When I got there it was absolutely horrific. The wounds were opened and he was hiding in the corner. I just went weak. I picked him up and carried him to the car and as I was driving I could smell rotting meat."

Baran says they're turning to the public for help to find the animal's abuser.

"We want to charge them under the Animal Protection Act and we also want to rehabilitate this person so that he doesn't do this again."
