Residents unhappy three cannibalism accused released
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Estcourt residents say they're worried about their safety after charges were withdrawn against three of the men implicated in the so-called cannibalism case.
All seven suspects appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate's Court - where charges were withdrawn against Lindokuhle Masondo, Wiseman Madlala and Sazi Ndlovu this week.
The NPA says it was due to insufficient evidence at this stage. Local ward councillor, Mthembeni Majola says chaos broke out in the streets when proceedings wrapped up. He says police had to fire rubber bullets.
"In the community, we have a problem - we feel unsafe. I don't thin the police to patrol our area. We are quite disturbed about this," he says.

The NPA says the matter is still under investigation, and charges could be reinstated against the three men if more evidence is uncovered.
The remaining four suspects are due back in court on the 27th of this month.
