Several roads in that vicinity were blocked again this morning, as demonstrators - believed to be from the nearby informal settlement - took to the streets.

Police say about 100 people were protesting along Varsity Drive and the M19. No arrests have been made.

Residents say protesters dragged refuse bags, branches and other debris onto roads at around 3h30 today, before setting them on fire.

Rubendra Govender, a high school teacher, says it's frustrating - especially for those who need to get to work and school.

"I have a lot of fear in my heart. I've experienced stone-throwing over the past few weeks. I've had two punctures, but thankfully I was safe. More than that, the frustration is boiling over. We empathise with the plight of our informal residents. It's got to the point where I am thinking of leaving this area," Govender said.

"They have found that the roads were closed - blocked with burning tyres and concrete blocks. We have deployed the armoured vehicles to remove all of this from the roadway."
