Reservoir levels 'improving' as water returns to northern Durban

eThekwini Municipality says two valves on the Northern Aqueduct pipelines, believed to have been tampered with by saboteurs, have been fixed.

Officials toured the entire bulk water system on Monday to see for themselves the work that's been under way to get water running from the taps of homes and businesses in uMhlanga, and other areas north of Durban.  

 

A water supply crisis entered a second week on Monday. 

 

As of Tuesday morning, the city reported that water levels at reservoirs seem to be stable and are improving but will take a day or two to return to normal levels.

"A case of sabotage was opened at the Greenwood Park police station," said the city's Governance and Human Capital Committee chair Nkosenhle Madlala.

 

"One of the interventions we have undertaken was to supply the northern areas from a different reservoir at Umngeni-UThukela Water's Durban Heights Waterworks."

 

This was intended to bypass the section of the Northern Aqueduct suspected to have the restriction which has still not been identified.
