The National Sea Rescue Institute says it was alerted to a drowning in progress on Monday by police and rangers from iSimangaliso Wetland Park.
"NSRI St Lucia, police and iSimangaliso Wetland Park rangers conducted an extensive sea and shoreline search for a 14-year-old local male, who was missing in the surf after being swept out into the sea in the current while swimming," says NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.
"Despite an extensive search, there remains no sign of the teenage.
"Police Search and Rescue are continuing in an ongoing search. Thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing teenager in this difficult time."
