Reopening of flood-damaged R603 'to restore local economy'
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Transport officials say reopening the main R603 route in Adams Mission near Amanzimtoti will support efforts to restore the local economy.
Motorists are able to use the road again after it was closed for more than a year.
The Mbumbulu road collapsed during the December 2021 floods, leaving one section inaccessible.
Transport MEC Sipho Hlomuka officially reopened the route on Monday.
He says the repair project cost the department R25 million.
"This road is strategic in linking the areas of Amanzimtoti, iLlovu, Adams Mission, Mbumbulu, Mid-Illovo and Pietermaritzburg," says spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane.
"This road is also an alternative to the N3, which regularly experiences heavy congestion due to the upgrades and construction work currently taking place.
"This road will restore the local economy and movement of public transport."
