Remains of majority of Limpopo Easter crash victims identified

The Department of Health in Limpopo has identified most of the victims who died in last month's horrific bus crash.

Limpopo Bus Accident

A team was set up to positively identify the 45 people killed when the vehicle travelling from Botswana to Moria plunged some 50 metres off a bridge and caught alight.

The worshippers, all from Botswana, were making their way to an annual Easter gathering.

An eight-year-old girl was the only survivor of the crash.

Provincial health's Thilivhali Muavha says they have confirmed the identities of 42 of the victims so far.

He says their team's now turning its attention to repatriation efforts.

"The team comprising members of the SAPS victim identification unit and Forensic Pathology Services will meet on Monday at Mokopane hospital, where they will finalise the packaging of the remains of the deceased to prepare them for repatriation."

The province’s Health MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, commended the team's efforts.

"We are short of words to appreciate our team for the professionalism and speed at which they managed to handle this disaster and appreciate its sensitivity. We are looking forward to meeting the team on Monday at Mokopane Hospital, where further updates on the way forward will be provided. The team is currently finalising the analysis of the remaining samples."
