Recovery efforts continue in KZN

KZN Education says it's still trying to get a clear picture of the impact of this weekend's storm on the province's schools.

This is why it's asking parents and guardians to make the call on whether they should send their children to school today. 

 

The storm swept across parts of the province this weekend causing chaos. Roads and properties were flooded, damaged or destroyed. 

 

The department says it's too early to determine the extent of the damage. During last month's floods - more than 600 schools were affected. 

 

Education officials have asked principals to inform them of how this weekend's heavy rains impacted their schools and the routes in their area.

 

eThekwini Municipality's asked people making their way to work or school this morning to please be careful. 

 

Parts of Umdloti were badly affected with Bellamont Road severely damaged. The city released images showing the terrifying impact of the storm and a portion of a block of flats washed away.

 

 Residents are asked to be cautious in the vicinity of Hoy Park - near North Beach - as the sports facility is completely submerged.

At Shallcross, the temporary bridge at Blundell Road is closed. The municipality says its bus service is up and running this morning.

 

Meanwhile, eThekwini says its technicians are working on restoring power to numerous areas - after reports of outages came through from people in KwaMashu, Phoenix, Ntuzuma, La Mercy, Westmead and Sydenham - among other places.

 

But KZN's recovery efforts continue after the weekend's persistent showers - it seems that Eskom won't be coming to the party. 

 

The utility's implementing stage 2 power cuts every day this week, from 5pm until 10 in the evening. 

 

It says that due to the continued shortage of generation capacity, residents might experience load shedding outside of your scheduled time.
